Automation

What Is Automation?

Automation is the process of using technology to make something happen with the least amount of human effort. It involves making systems operate on a preset set of instructions, rules, or conditions so that the work is either automatically carried out, rather than manually by an individual. Businesses use automation where tasks are repetitive routine time-sensitive and based on rules.

How Does Automation Work?

Automation starts with a set of commands which tells the system what to do in certain conditions. These commands may be accessed by an event, time or precise condition. When the condition is achieved, the task is executed without a person starting it.

For instance, a company may set up automatic backups to run at specific times. It may also configure an alert to notify staff when a service stops working. In a cloud environment, additional computing resources can be added when demand exceeds a specified level. Automation extends beyond individual tasks as well. Different systems can be connected so that the completion of one process starts the next step in a broader workflow.

Key Characteristics of Automation

  • Predefined rules: Actions are determined in advance through rules, instructions, schedules, or conditions configured for the system.
  • Minimal human intervention: Once configured, routine operations can proceed without requiring an employee to initiate each occurrence manually.
  • Consistency: Defined procedures are followed in accordance with the same configuration whenever the relevant operation is performed.
  • Repeatability: Scheduled or event-driven operations can be executed repeatedly when the specified time or triggering condition is reached.
  • Integration: Automation can connect separate applications or services, allowing an action completed in one system to initiate a subsequent operation.

Benefits of Automation

  • Time saving: Reduces the time taken by employees to carry out repetitive manual activities.
  • Decreases error: Prevents the mistakes that can easily happen when people continuously do the same thing.
  • Helps simplify processes: Allows standard activities to be performed efficiently in a timely manner.
  • Supports bandwidth: Enables organizations to handle an expanding workload without the need for proportional increase in manual labor.
  • Helps employees to get rid of lower-value work: Reduces routine tasks so employees can focus on decision-making and problem-solving.

Automation in Cloud Computing

Automation is commonly applied to different parts of a cloud environment. It handles routine work involved in setting up resources, deploying applications, maintaining configurations, creating backups, and monitoring workloads. A cloud system may also be configured to react when a particular event occurs. For instance, additional computing resources can be made available when demand rises, while unnecessary resources can later be removed. These operations are carried out according to rules defined for the environment, which reduces the need for repeated manual intervention. As a result, routine cloud-management tasks are performed in a more consistent manner.
